Suspension Dyno

What is suspension dyno testing?

Suspension dyno testing is a very accurate method of checking the actual function of a suspension member.  It does the very simple function of compressing and rebounding a suspension member, but does it very accurately.  Apply from 0 to 1000 lbs of force and see how fast the suspension member compress or rebounds.  The rate at which the suspension moves is a measurement of how stiff or soft it has been adjusted.

What how is the information used?

This information is complied and put into a graph for easy viewing; see one of the example tests listed on the menu to the left.  This graph show you how the suspension is work at the time it was tested.

This information can then be used to accurately change your suspension.  When some one say, "my suspension is too stiff", now it can be tested and you will know exactly how stiff it is.  This gives you a base line for modifying your suspension.  Then the suspension can be modified, changing valve pistons, Valving shims, tapering slow speed adjustment needles, and any thing else you need to do to get it perfect.  When making these modification, you can see from the dyno exactly how much the suspension has been changed, and how much more or less you should change it.

How can dyno testing my suspension help me?

  1. Once you get your suspension is set up perfectly you can run a dyno test and get a record of how it is performing.  Then you you make more changes, brake something, etc.. you can change it back so it works exactly how you like it.
  2. In Off-Road Motorcycles, there is one set up for Enduro racing, one for Supercross, and one for Motocross.  Dyno records while making modification can speed up the process of finding which setting work best in each type of terrain.
  3. Dyno test can also help when you get different suspension members.  Buy and new bike, quad, race car, etc... and find the your old suspension worked better; if you have a dyno run of the old suspension, the new suspension can be modified to work exactly like previous dyno records.
  4. Or in the opposite direction; get a new bike and like the suspension better; dyno  the new suspension and have the old suspension set up just like the new suspension.  Dyno testing is independent of the name brand or age of the suspension member, it only test the actual function.

How can I have my suspension run on a dyno?

MEI Machine designs and manufactures suspension dynos from scratch.  Prices for testing depends on what additional service is being performed, and the type of suspension member  that is being tested.

We can also build you a suspension dyno to fit your need.  Portable, adaptable, etc...
